The Ensham safety and health management
system is second to none in the
industry. Risk management underpins all
work procedures and these are developed

enviable safety record which is a leader
among the state’s coal producers (see
section on
Safety).
Ensham was at the forefront of flexible
work arrangements being the first coal
mine in Australia to develop an
Enterprise Flexibility Agreement which
was negotiated directly with the Ensham
workforce in response to their preferred
work arrangements.
This arrangement is a key factor in the
productivity of the mine and the
stability of the Ensham workforce which
has an extremely low turnover coupled
with a healthy “can do” safe operating
culture.
The mine workforce operates on 12 hours
shifts (7 days on – 7 days off). This
arrangement is facilitated by the
provision of modern, comfortable on-site
villages comprising individual units
complete with their own en-suites.
The villages include landscaping,
undercover parking, two gymnasiums,
tennis courts, two swimming pools, dining
room and on-site licensed bar.
Employees receive accredited training
enabling them to be multi-skilled and
remunerated according to skills and also
share in bonus payments tied to overall
mine productivity and coal prices.
Ensham Resources is Queensland’s third
largest thermal coal producer and is
planning a future underground mine.
As a result, Ensham offers a wide range
of career opportunities for a broad
range of professionals, skilled and
semi-skilled workers. These include -
but are not restricted to - positions
for electrical, fitter and mechanical
tradespeople, machinery operators,
mining engineers, environmentalists,
accountants and geologists.
In addition to placing experienced
workers, Ensham provides a number of
direct traineeships, apprenticeships and
a graduate trainee scheme to place
graduates and a limited number of school
leavers.
It is also part of a local working party
to attract skilled people to the region,
offers scholarships to talented
individuals interesting in a mining
career and helps local schools obtain
industry exposure for their students to
help them plan their future studies and
career goals.
